The country’s leading public sector telecommunication service provider, BSNL has plans to provide satellite-based phone services to all in 2 years.

BSNL plans to use the Inmarsat series of 14 satellites to provide satellite phone service.

Inmarsat. PLC is a British satellite telecommunications company, offering global mobile services. It provides telephone and data services to users worldwide.

In the 1st Phase, the satellite phone service will be provided to the government security organizations such as Border Security Force and Railway Protections. Subsequently, the satellite phone services will be extended to other public services.

As the communication is a direct channel from the satellites at 35700 km height from the earth, the phone services can be accessed from anywhere like ships, planes or anywhere on the land.

BSNL officials informed that during the 1st Phase, 40000 connections are to be provided. The charges are likely to be fixed at Rs. 30 to Rs. 35 per minute.
