MCI withdraws age and attempts limit for NEET

In its recent statement, the Medical Council of India says there will be no limit on the total number of attempts for taking up National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test. There will also be no age limit to appear for the exam, it adds.
The Supreme Court mandated uniform entrance test for medical admissions in 2016. The Central Board of School Education conducts the exam for undergraduate courses and the National Board of Examinations conducts the same for postgraduate courses.
The test was made mandatory for all institutions and last year, the state-run institutions alone were exempted.
The CBSE had announced in its bulletin that a candidate shall appear for the exam only three times and those who have already completed these attempts will not be eligible for taking up the test this year, 2017. Later, in February, it was announced that the attempts made for AIPMT or NEET before 2017 will not be taken under consideration. The NEET attempt in 2017 will be considered as the first, it added. The maximum age limit for NEET appearance was 25 while taking up the test. For reserved category candidates, the age limit can be relaxed up to 5 years.
However, considering the recommendations from oversight committee and union health ministry, either of the recommendations were withdrawn. The number of doctors in India may significantly come down by imposing such NEET limitation. Hence, we have considered the recommendations and withdrawn limitations on age and number of attempts.
