The central government has announced that Pongal festival is not a compulsory government holiday.
The central government announced that Pongal has been removed from the list of holidays for 2017 and that it will be a holiday only for certain regions in the country.
It also informed that those employees interested in celebrating Pongal can avail the holiday. The government employees will have to obtain prior permission for availing this holiday for Pongal festival. In case the higher official refuses to grant leave, the employee will have to attend duty.
The central government employees unions have protested very strongly against this measure and informed that they will go on a protest demonstration on Tuesday (10/1/2017).
