It may be that the Bengalurus Kempegowda International airport is doing good with cargo export and import. Chennais airport will have an additional bay to serve the wide-body aircraft and have a new cargo bay. This new bay is likely to be a huge competitor in another one year or so. When such a bay is not present, all the airlines were kept diverted to Bengaluru.

Plans to modify the existing cargo terminal in Chennai airport are being finalized by officials, said AAI general manager, L.R. Joshi. There is a rise in import of textiles by air from Chennai. Engineering goods for textile industry contributed to most of the import through airport.

About 24,300 tonnes of textiles and garments, and 20,900 tonnes of engineering goods were handled through exports in Chennai airport. This is a positive trend as Chennai is taking good position in the manufacturing center and reaching good position. Cargo facilities are planned to get expanded at the airport in order to meet the demand.

In the year 2014-15, about 3,03,904 tonnes of cargo was handled. This is 4.05 percent increased compared to the previous years. Deepak Shastri, the director of the airport said increase it manufacturing will in turn enhance the domestic passenger traffic.

He added that a common user cargo terminal will soon be constructed and the existing export cargo facility will be modified by the construction of additional bay for Boeing 747s in Phase 2 of the expansion of airport. A new common user terminal is planned by the AAI. This will be for the domestic cargo as its volume as handled by the airport (81,432 tonnes) is raised by 13.61 percent in 2014-15 compared to the previous years.
