Chennai Sangamam is the brain child of Kanimozhi, a daughter of Kalaignar Karunanidhi, the chief Minister of Tamilnadu. Seeds for Chennai Sangamam were sowed by Kanimozhi in 2006.Sangamam means Confluence. Chennai Sangamam is a great creative concept, aimed to promote rural arts and culture. Chennai Sangaman is unique mix of art, dance, folk-music, food and culture. It reflected the socio-cultural views of citizen of Tamil Nadu along with the cosmopolitan views. It brings out the best of rural arts and a great attempt to integrate it with urban culture and interestingly show casing the forgotten or unsung rural arts; more importantly it connects the rural with urban.

It started as a part of Pongal, the Tamilar Thiruvizha [Festival of Tamils], during mid January every year; it includes City Festival which would reflect the cosmopolitan character of Chennai today. Chennai Sangamam is a mirror of shared socio-cultural experiences of the people of Tamil Nadu, especially the rural folks.

The very idea of Chennai Sangamam derives inspiration from the Bangaluru Habba’s   celebrations of cultural festival from the open parks, beaches and streets. Dept. of Tourism & Culture-Govt. of Tamil Nadu extended its support and the media played a key role in the success of our first edition of Chennai Sangamam held in 2007.The logo of Chennai Sangamam – the Calf-Head logo was the creation of artist Maruthu. In 2008 Chennai Sangamam drew more accolades from the critics of arts and media and it proved a point that how much urbanites had been longing for quality entertainments. Significant contribution by the Chennai Sangamam is that it brings together people from different culture as one community. It is an eye opener to next-gen youth, who tend to look west wards.
