According to the current scenario, a huge number of matriculation schools in Tamil Nadu are trying to get CBSE affiliation, particularly after the state implemented Samacheer Kalvi, which emphasizes on uniform syllabi. Although Samacheer Kalvi was introduced to bring administrative flexibility and academic freedom in the education sector, it did not gain a good welcome among parents and teachers. In the past 2 years, more than 70 schools with matriculation syllabi have migrated to CBSE stream.

There are over 4000 private matriculation schools in Tamil Nadu and apart from 70 schools which have recently got the CBSE affiliation, now 50 schools are in the pipeline waiting for the approval. Currently there are 559 CBSE and 77 ICSE schools in TN.

Mr. K.R Nandakumar, Secretary of Tamil Nadu Nursery, Primary, Matriculation and Higher Secondary Schools Association says that the introduction of samacheer kalvi with different fee structure in the state for matriculation and CBSE has brought this change affecting many schools to shift to CBSE.

From the parents’ end, they are worried that with this samacheer kalvi, their children are not able to perform in any national level competitive exams like how CBSE students do.
