Reports on out of school children in Tamil Nadu

According to a recent door-to-door survey taken by the school education department’s Sarva Siksha Abhiyan wing this year, it is found that Tamil Nadu has over 43,448 schools out of school. It is Villupuram that tops the entire list comprising most number of children who are out of school. Nearly 3085 children are found not to have got enrolled in any school in the district. This district was among the top 5 four years ago. This has now overtaken Coimbatore which was in the first position in the year 2010. The other four positions belonging to the top 5 now are Coimbatore, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram and Salem. It is ninth position for Chennai consisting 1945 children out of school.
Compared to rest of the states, Tamil Nadu is far ahead in the number of children enrolled in schools. TN counts to 99% enrolment. According to child rights activists, Villupuram tops with more number of child labors I the districts. More number of tribals wander in the districts migrating for work. Owing to this reason, they are unable to enroll their children in a school.
