India will be celebrating its 67th Independence Day on 15th August. The celebration will be nationwide with a lot of fun & fair.

The central government has issued a warning that National Flags made of paper only MUST be used. The government warned against using plastic flags.

Central Government’s Home Ministry internal affairs director, Shyamala Mohan, has written a letter on this issue to all the states.

Generally, plastic flags are being used in both public & private functions. Plastic items do not decompose easily. This leads to severe environmental pollution.

Further, problems are encountered in removing such plastic national flags in a dignified manner. Hence, the state governments MUST NOT PERMIT usage of plastic flags in all functions.

State governments should undertake efforts to make the public aware about the compulsory use of only paper flags.

National Dignity Offence Act 1971 will be invoked for taking legal action on those who sell/buy plastic flags.

Based on this, the persons who use plastic national flags may be imprisoned up to 3 years.

This announcement has upset the national flag manufacturers who are anxious on this development and the after-effects.
