Beach Beautification Proposal Gets Form!

Several key factors ground behind the implication of beach beautification proposal from Thiruvanmayur to Neelankarai include the turtle information centre at Neelankarai, sewage treatment plants across five fishing settlements and amenities to utilize treated water for preserving local vegetation.

On Monday, the Chennai Corporation has conducted a meeting with Environment experts and marine biologists to fit in the modifications in the project sketch for the beautification of Kottivakkam, Palavakkam and Neelankarai beaches.

Also, the turtle information centre facilitates to accomplish workshops for students without abusing the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) norms.

Various modifications in the detailed sketch of the proposal includes preserved vegetation so as to curb soil erosion, Lighting facilities proposed near the sculpture art gallery, cricket pitch, football ground and volleyball court, a 4.1-km jogging track, moving the streetlight fittings across the beach side of the road, parks for children, first-aid booths, a watch tower, streetlights and emergency telephones to spot aspects that bother the environment.

As per the earlier study, about 1,400 visitors to Neelankarai beach, 700 visitors to Kottivakkam beach and 600 visitors to Palavakkam beach has been recorded in weekends. 

Also, the residents of the fishing settlements have given go-ahead sign for Rs. 55 Crores worth project, which is to be executed as per the CRZ II norms.

The new proposal will employ non-corrosive steel plates to avert damage due to the proximity of the coastline.
