Chennai falls prey to cyclone Mora, rains likely

Posted on: 29/May/2017 5:40:39 PM
Chennai weather has remained almost dry for quite some time now. Apart from a few occasional showers here and there, the city has remained free from the rains. During the month of May, Chennai has only recorded a few traces of rain.

To be precise, in the entire month, Chennai has only been able to witness rainfall four times. Otherwise, hot and humid conditions have been the highlight of the city which usually gets flooded during the Northeast Monsoon season.

There were developments of several weather features close to the Tamil Nadu coast. However, none of them were in proximity of Chennai and its adjoining areas. Thus, no rains were seen over the city of Chennai.

Now, as per weathermen at Skymet, light rainfall is expected over the city of Chennai today. At present, cloud cover has increased over Chennai and a small patch of convective cloud has developed near Chennai which may give light thundershowers for short duration.

However, thereafter, dry days are likely to continue over Chennai and adjoining areas. In fact, adjoining city of Bengaluru rains are also expected to take a backseat.

The reason for dry weather conditions can be attributed to the prevailing Cyclonic Storm Mora. The cyclone which is likely to intensify further into a severe cyclonic storm as well is pulling away the moisture towards itself.

Thus, moisture content will be unavailable over the interiors of the Southern Peninsular India region. Chennai will remain dry with rains witnessing a disappearing trend at least for the next few days. Meanwhile, parts of the East Coast and East India along with Northeast India will witness good rains under the influence of Cyclone Mora.
