New device to detect cancer in just 10 seconds

In just 10 seconds, it is now possible to detect whether a tumor is cancerous or not thanks to the latest device.

Researchers at the University of Texas, Austin have designed a potent device that can identify cancerous tissues with topnotch accuracy at the time of surgery, thus producing results in as less as 10 seconds. This timing is 150 times faster than all the existing technologies currently in use.

The device is called the MasSpec Pen. It is a handheld instrument with which surgeons can generate precise information regarding which tissue has to be cut and which should be preserved, thus aiding in offering better treatment and bring down the cancer recurrence chance.

When you enquire to any cancer patient post-surgery, you would find the first thing to be said that he/she believes the doctor to have removed all the cancer out, says the team leader Livia Schiavinato Eberlin. When it is not so, the scenario will be heartbreaking. This newly developed technology could improve the overall surgeon performance by letting them remove till the very last trace of cancer at the time of surgery.

At present, the method used for diagnosing cancer and identifying the boundary line between cancerous tissue and normal tissue is called the Frozen Section Analysis. This is at times very inaccurate.
