Groundwater level up in many districts

Posted on: 21/Feb/2018 5:56:38 PM
In a recent survey conducted by the PWD (Public Works Department), it is established that the groundwater level has risen in many districts.

The staff of the State land and water resources statistical centre, which functions under the PWD (Public Works Department) in various districts have dug wells for analytical and research purposes. However, there are no research wells in Chennai.

Monthly reports, carrying the details of groundwater levels, etc in different places, are compiled and sent every month to the government.

The Northeast monsoon rainy season started by the end October last year in Tamil Nadu, ended on 4th January 2018. The rainfall this year has fallen short of average. Still, there has been an increase in groundwater levels in several districts.

As per the survey conducted in January 2017, there has been a substantial increase in the groundwater level in Thiruvannamalai and Theni districts.

There has been a slight increase in the groundwater level in the districts of Salem, Villupuram, Dindigul, Perambalur, and Tirunelveli.

The groundwater level has decreased in 2 districts – Sivagangai and Nagapattinam.

There has been an increase in groundwater level in most other districts.

Only with the resources of the groundwater, it would be possible to cater for the required water for irrigation and drinking in all districts. However, as consumption of groundwater has increased in this month, there are prospects of groundwater level going down again in several districts.
