What really are TMT Rods?

Most of us have seen the TV and newspaper advertisements for TMT rods. Interested to know what they really are? Well, TMT stands for Thermo-Mechanical Treatment.
During this treatment, the rods will be tested for their quality by subjecting them to high temperature and then in cool condition. They will place loads on the rods to check the extent to which the TMT rods can carry the weight. The rods which are subjected to these tests and withstand them are high-quality rods.
TMT is essential. It is especially mandatory for the rods used for construction. So, while buying, check, confirm and buy only TMT rods. Ensure that the rods are not oily or muddy and no such deposits are there on the rods purchased. In case of oily and muddy rods, they may not bind/bond properly with the concrete due to the oily substance. So, they must be avoided.
There are several companies manufacturing construction rods. As may be known, there are surely some mal-operations and malpractices in this industry as well. When rods are made from the rejected waste iron, they may not have the capacity to withstand heavy loads. Using them may result in a weaker foundation with the strong possibility of later collapse. So, it is better to take care and buy only good quality rods.
There is a equipment known as ‘Universal Testing Machine’to test the load withstanding capacity of the rods, A sample rod can be taken from the bunch and subjected to the test using this equipment.
