Happy Birthday Madras

Posted on: 22/Aug/2017 5:44:34 PM
Today is the 378th birthday of Chennai city. This is celebrated as Madras Day. The day is named so as a tribute to the citys past.

On this same day, in 1639, a tiny land area was brought by the British in look out for the beach from the Nayak rulers. This was to establish their East India Company. Then it was named Chennaipatnam. Then the old Fort St. George came up and the George Town was developed which turned into Madras later.

Along river Cooum, the city was developed. Madras Presidency, the then Madras encompassed Andhra Pradesh.

The Tamil Nadu government renamed the city as Chennai in 1996 as an end to colonial tag. However, Chennaites still celebrate the day as Madras Day.

The city has been growing continuously, and in fact got a bit conservative. I have however grown during the best days of Madras, says Vijay Amritraj, a former tennis player. The best in the city is the Marina beach.

The only Indian city to celebrate this extent of colonial culture is Chennai. This is in fact called as never changing spirit in spite of being ever-changing.
