The Telugu-Ganga project is supplying 10 cusecs of water to Chennai city. This water is procured from the Krishna River. On Sunday, at 5 pm, water reached Uthukottai. This will be followed by arrival at Poondi reservoir in the following days, officials say. In spite of this, water shortage in many other parts of the city is likely in summer this year.

In Andhra Pradesh, the government has opened water for the purpose of irrigation. Out of this, there is 3tmcft which is 3 thousand million cubic feet of water supplied to the state from the Krishna River. In the months that follow, there is a likely surge in Krishna water speed and volume. It will be possible to cater to the demands in the next two or three months as we receive 300-600 cusecs of water.

In Chennai, annually, the requirement is 12tmcft. In the recent winter that passed, the Andhra government made no water release at all. Officials believe the Andhra government to release water abiding by the agreement for this year.

This water will however not suffice. The Veeranam water supply scheme shall provide 18mld water to the southern parts of Chennai city, and Nemmeli desalination plant and other agricultural wells shall provide 100mld water.

Private water tanks are among the major sources of water to Chennai city, especially in the northern and central parts. The Minjur desalination plant provides 100mld water to these regions on a daily basis. In Red Hills and Poondi, metrowater procures water out of dead storage.

In case there is not enough water supply through Krishna water, the central and northern parts of Chennai shall rely on quarry and agricultural wells both of which would not suffice. every day, the supply to these regions of the city will be 450mld. This will get hiked to 550mld in the following week and the same shall continue until June.

Tender for pumping water out of 350 wells providing daily water supply of 40mld is also already finalized. There will be water pumping of 30mld from Retteri, Porur and Ayanambakkam lakes, as water treatment are likely at the last try.

There were meetings between metrowater and IT companies and large hotels to discuss about purchasing water from them.
