High Court approval to offer Rs. 1000 to ration card holders who buy only sugar

The Chennai High Court has granted approval to offer the Pongal special cash gift of Rs. 1000 to the ration card holders who buy only sugar.

On behalf of the Chief Secretary of the state government Department of Cooperatives, Food, and Consumer Safety, Dayanand Kataria, a petition was submitted to the Chennai High Court requesting approval to offer the Pongal special cash gift of Rs. 1000 to those ration card holders who buy only sugar.

This came up for enquiry today (Friday, 11th January) afternoon before the bench of judges Sathyanarayanan and Rajamanickam. Advocate Vijay Narayan, representing the state government of Tamil Nadu, explained that ration cards for buying only sugar were distributed only with a view to reduce the demand for rice and facilitate the ration card holders to buy the additional quantity of sugar. He further explained that the ration card holders who buy only sugar do not belong to the economically forward section of the society they were also poor. So, he requested the ban to be lifted and they should also be offered the Pongal Special gift of Rs. 1000 cash.
