The Supreme Court has given an extension for the deadline to the State Government of Tamil Nadu to submit a report regarding the sand import and related chemical report.

Mr. M R M Ramaiah had submitted a petition to the Madurai Branch of the Chennai High Court to grant permission to sell the imported sand kept presently in the Tuticorin Port.

The Madurai Brach enquired on this petition and ordered that all the sand quarries in the state be closed before the end of the next month and also banned to open new sand quarries.

The state government of Tamil Nadu submitted a petition against this which was quashed by the Chennai High Court. Subsequently, the state government of Tamil Nadu appealed to the Supreme Court on this issue. The supreme court ordered an interim ban on the order of the Chennai High Court.

This case came up for enquiry last Thursday. The Supreme Court ordered that the state government of Tamil Nadu must submit a detailed analytical report on the import of sand including the price aspect before 16th May.

In this situation, the case was taken up for enquiry on Wednesday before the bench of the panel of judges Madan P. Lokur and Navin Sinha,

The senior advocate, Mukul Rohtagi, who appeared on behalf of the Tamil Nadu state government, submitted that it will require another 29 days for the chemical analytical report on the imported sand.  It will require a further few more days to submit the detailed report. He further informed that the state government of Tamil Nadu will pay the godown charges for the storage of the sand.

Following this, the panel issued an order that an extension of 20 days is given to the state government of Tamil Nadu to submit the chemical analytical report on the imported sand. The enquiry is postponed to 9th July.
