The news that eight educational institutions in the state of Tamil Nadu has been granted autonomous status by University Grants Commission or UGC has been making huge noises now.

The students and staffs belonging to eight educational institutions such as SSN College of Engineering affiliated to Anna University, state run Anna University plus others like University of Madras, Alagappa University, the deemed to be universities of SASTRA of Thanjavur and Sri Ramachandra Medical Research Institute, VIT Vellore and Dr MGR Educational and Research Institute of Maduravoyal, must feel happy and proud regarding this.

This autonomous status has been given based on the scores given by NAAC or National Assessment and Accreditation Council.

In the year 2017, Mr. Prakash Javadekar, union minister for HR, caught the attention of many when he announced that the institutions classified as Grade-1 and Grade -2 would be granted autonomy. It is important to note that Alagappa University plus other famous educational institutions like SRMC and SASTRA have been categorised as Grade-1 universities as their NAAC score was above 3.50. Famous educational institutions like Anna University scored 3.35 and Madras University scored 3.32.

The amazing piece of information is these institutions can start new courses, off campus centres, skill development courses, research parks and new academic programmes.

Hiring foreign faculties plus enrolling foreign students, giving incentive based emoluments for the faculty, enter into academic collaborations, run open distance learning programmes etc could be carried out by these institutions.

Established in the year 1994, NAAC or National Assessment and Accreditation Council plays huge role and it assesses and accredits many higher educational institutes in India.
