Vocational Excellence Award Presented

Smt. Priyadarsini Govind, Kalaimamani and Sangeet Natak Akademi Awardee, received the Vocational Excellence Award 2018 by The Rotary Club of Madras East (RCME), in association with Saraswathi Vidyalaya.

The Chief Guest Dr. Padma Subramanyam, Managing Trustee, BIFAC did the honours. Rtn. B.S Purushotham, President, RCME, Mr. K. S. Natarajan, Principal, Saraswathi Vidyalaya along with other members of the club were present during the occasion.

About the Awardee

Smt Priyadarsini Govind is an exemplary Bharathanatyam Artiste of international repute. She has excelled in her chosen discipline, winning accolades from connoisseurs, critics and rasikas alike. Her portrayals of various characters and emotions are marked by a distinct passion to communicate using the medium of dance. She has essayed conventional ideas traditional to Bharathanatyam as well as contemporary issues and interpretations of well known idioms so as to reach out to the audience of the day.

Apart from her professional success in the dance form; she has utilised her knowledge and her interest as an art administrator; to enable the Institution - Kalakshetra- reach out to the people it has always been intended to serve. She initiated, along with Aanmajothi, Cultural Wing of Saraswathi Vidyalaya - an organisation which has been encouraged by RCME over the years - a long term plan, to take up children who may not have the opportunity and means to learn the art form. Students of six schools of the Chennai Corporation - about twenty in each - are being given regular classes by faculty and senior students of Kalakshetra. It is intended as a major outreach activity of Kalakshetra, to take the art to the doorsteps of the students, encouraging them by providing the best facilities.

It is apparent that the guidelines laid down by Rotary International for this award have been taken care of, keeping in mind the contribution of Smt Priyadarsini Govind. She has kept high
