Ravindranath, Chairman, Gleneagles Global Hospitals and Mr. Ramesh Krishnan, Chief Executive Officer, India Operations Division, Parkway Pantai Limited were also present at   the ceremony.

Liver transplantation has provided a second opportunity at life for many patients world over for the last 50 years but in India, it has been a reality only for the last decade. The Institute of Liver Diseases and Transplantation at Gleneagles Global Health City spearheaded by Prof. Mohamed Rela, since their first transplant in August 2009, have performed 1000 liver transplantations in the state of Tamil Nadu making it one of the most successful Liver transplant programmes in the country.  The uniqueness of the programme is that it has been able to offer both deceased donor and live donor transplantations as the state of Tamil Nadu has been the pioneer in the country in deceased donor organ donation. The Institute for Liver Disease and Transplantation has pioneered optimal utilisation of the available deceased donor organ by split liver transplantation, where one liver is split and utilised for two individuals, usually an adult and a child, and have successfully performed 40 such split liver transplants. The Institute for Liver Disease and Transplantation has performed 278 deceased donor and 722 live donor transplantations. The programme has now grown to become one of the largest centres in the world for liver transplantation in children.  278 children (youngest child aged 4 months) have gained benefit through transplantation from the programme.

The hospital has partnered with several hospitals in Chennai, Madurai, Coimbatore and Trichy for transplantation and the team has performed liver transplant at these centres also. This has enabled growth of liver transplantation all over the state of Tamil Nadu. The programme has patients from all over India and also from more than 20 countries all over the world.  The transplant centre has a much sought after fellowship programme to train national and international doctors interested in the field of liver Transplantation and about 25 doctors have gone through the training programme so far.

“The journey to reach this milestone has been interesting, filled with varied experiences, as liver transplantation was not well known as a successful procedure even to many physicians in India when we first started. The experience has helped us and others to grow in the process and has created a huge awareness about liver disease, organ donation and liver transplantation among the public, patients and medical fraternity. Most importantly, the successfsful outcomes have had a very positive feedback effect in the growth of transplantation in the state and the country .The significance of team work cannot be overstated in a field like Liver transplantation and the commitment and passion of every member in the team has a role to play in the overall outcome “said, Prof. Mohamed Rela, Chairman and Director, Institute of Liver Disease and Transplant, Gleneagles Global Health City.

Prof. Rela also added “The government of Tamil Nadu has been very proactive in promoting organ donation and transplantation in the state and this has been a huge strength to us in this journey. We have been happy to sign a MOU with the Government of Tamil Nadu to provide transplant services to the patients at Govt. Stanley Medical College Hospital, Chennai, through which transplantation is performed free of cost to the patients at Government hospital. This is the first of its kind MOU for the state and we are pleased to have performed 19 liver transplantations at Govt. Stanley Medical College hospital since March 2016 with 100% successful outcomes”.

The Mission of Gleneagles Global Health City is to achieve the dream of a healthy world through continuous innovation, dedication to quality, provision of compassionate and affordable medical services. Milestones such as this that are being acknowledged by our honorable Vice President of India and the Governor of Tamil Nadu will definitely motivate us to achieve our mission. M.Venkaiah Naidu, Honourable Vice President of India.“Liver Transplantation at that time was very challenging due to poor awareness of public, doctors were skeptical and issue of affordability. Against all odds, Dr.Ravindranath tried very hard with the help of Prof.Rela and many other stalwart colleagues of Prof. Rela from Kings College, helped Global Hospitals to establish a pioneer centre for Liver Transplantation in the country. Later they have started Chennai which is the flagship Hospital with Multi-organ Transplantation, Tertiary & Quaternary Hospital. Then they started Bangalore & Mumbai all doing transplantations.

When Global Hospital came to Chennai, Prof. Rela, ‘son of the soil’ from Chennai returned leaving a lucrcrative career in the Kings College Hospital, London and made this remarkable achievement of 1000 Liver Transplantation in a span of 7 years. My congratulations to Prof. Rela and Dr.Ravindranath and all the accomplished team members.”Added, Shri.M.Venkaiah Naidu.
