Textbooks in Braille and audio formats for visually impaired children

For students belonging to class 10, 11 and 12 who are set to take up the board exam this year will have more options on textbooks in Braille, and audio formats in mobile phones that can help them in easy access.
To over 150 visually challenged students, and resource centres under Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyam, these devices are distributed. This is done in association with Samsung, Cognizant, and Bookshare.
Bookshare is an online library for those who have print disabilities. These Samsung phones have Bookshare installed in them.
The director of RMSA says to start with, in the first phase of the project, for the ongoing academic year, they have selected visually impaired students from class 10, 11 and 12 and started distributing mobile handsets. With this, the primary aim is to ensure the students get accessible learning materials that they can have handy, carrying anywhere and everywhere.
They were in the process of identifying more number of visually impaired children in mainstream as well as special schools. In this initiative, last year, a hundred devices were distributed.
On Bookshare in DAISY format – Digital Accessible Information System, these school textbooks for State board stream for class 10, 11 and 12 are available in both English as well as Tamil.
