License on DigiLocker cannot replace original hardcopy

Clarifying all the doubts among the public, city traffic police clarified that according to the Motor Vehicles Act, motorists cannot carry the DigiLocker as a substitute for carrying original driving license.

On Monday, the Madras High Court had denied to pass an interim order to restrain police from seeking original license from motorists. It is likely that the hearing on main case will take place on Friday. In such circumstances, according to a release from the Additional Director of Police, State Traffic Planning Cell, until 8th September, motorists will not be insisted to carry original driving license while driving.

Amidst these, according to a senior traffic police officer, taking the license on a DigiLocker will not be considered valid.

DigiLocker aims at keeping the documents safe. However, the police personnel or the transport authorities do not have any application tool for the same. Further, under the Motor Vehicles Act, no provision allows carrying DigiLocker instead of the original driving license. With the absence of such needed application tool by law enforcing authorities, no such question of using DigiLocker has possibility.

The Prime Minister Narendra Modi had launched DigiLocker 2 years ago as a part of Digital India drive. It aims at making available all the documents for access at anytime, anywhere without the individual wanting to carry the original documents in hand.
