Download 3 HD movies in a second with infrared Wi-Fi

Professor Ton Koonen of Eindhoven University of Technology says they are making use of light rays to transmit information wirelessly. Each ray will behave as a very high capacity channel. This is more or less the same as optical fibre, eliminating the need for fibre. So far, 112 gigabits per second is achieved, he adds.

This data is equal to the total space of 3 full length HD movies downloaded in a second. Multiple invisible wavelengths each in different angles get emitted out of light antennas. When a smartphone or tablet is taken out of this zone, the other one will take over. Your eyes don’t absorb these infrared wavelengths and thus it is totally safe to use. Also, the system does not require more maintenance because of the absence of moving parts, and it is also free from power consumption. Each of the user can enjoy their own antenna.

One of the prominent features of the technique is the use of unshared capacity to all the users. Thus, each one of the users enjoy guaranteed capacity. And, you will get a beam only if traffic is needed. When there is no illumination, the entire place will be equipped for a single user which makes the entire system highly power efficient.
