It has been decided to change the existing names (given during the British Period) of all major roads in Chennai and replace them with the names of the major organisations/companies located in the respective roads.

It is several years since the city name was changed from Madras to Chennai.

As the city has grown extensively in the last few years up to the boundaries of Thiruvallur and Kanchipuram districts, the Chennai city has acquired the status of being a Chennai Metro Corporation.

Though several decades have passed, most of the major roads in Chennai Metro city carry the age old names given during the British Rule. The names also belong to the British and difficult to spell and pronounce.

A decision has recently been taken to change the names of 50 roads in the city including Haddows Road, Harrington Road, Sterling Road, Taylor’s Road, Armus Road, Greams Road, and Montieth Road.

Chennai George Town, Brasserie Road has been renamed as TNPSC Road. TNPSC is the most popular location on this road as there are thousands of people visiting the place which is the hub of all government examinations and recruitments.

Since the existing name is rather too difficult to spell and pronounce, it will be far easier now to note, remember, identify and tell the new name – TNPSC Road.

Montieth Road, located in Egmore, has been renamed as Red Cross Road. The office of Red Cross has been functioning at Montieth Road. So, being a popular and well-known name for identity, the new name Red Cross Road has been given to Montieth Road.

The Chennai Metro Corporation has been making arrangements to quickly install the new names on these roads.
