Packaged drinking water suppliers on strike for the 2nd consecutive day

Posted on: 29/May/2017 4:07:34 PM
With the continuing strike of the packaged drinking water suppliers, Chennai Metro has been experiencing acute drinking water shortage in several places.

The packaged drinking water suppliers went on strike from yesterday protesting against:

Imposition of 18% GST for purified water. Protest against the order to close the Packaged drinking water agencies, citing the reason of the acute fall in the groundwater level

There are around 350 packaged drinking water agencies in the districts of Chennai, Thiruvallur, and Kanchipuram. Out of this, 250 agencies are participating in the strike.

If the present stock of packaged drinking water cans is distributed and none remain, there is a possibility of acute water shortage.

Certain areas in North Chennai are already facing a severe shortage of drinking water due to the strike.

There are complaints that drinking water cans are being hoarded and also that the cans, which are normally sold at Rs. 35 to Rs. 40 per can, are now being sold at the higher price of Rs. 100 per can.

With all the major drinking water supply reservoirs for distribution of drinking water to the Chennai Metro City going dry, most of the residents depend on the packaged drinking water

So, there is an intensifying demand that the government must intervene in this regard and find an immediate solution.
