Satellite phone service from BSNL

Through INMARSAT, BSNL has now started its satellite phone service. This will be available for government agencies, to start with, and later, the same shall be opened for the other citizens in phases.
 
Areas that do not have any network coverage shall be encompassed under this and this will be provided through INMARSAT that has 14 satellites.
 
Speaking about this, the Telecom Minister Manoj Sinha said the services will be given for agencies that handle disasters, railways, state police, border security force and the other government agencies.
 
Those traveling in flight and on ships can later start using it. Chairman and Managing Director of BSNL Anupam Shrivastava said the satellite mobile service is being started today with voice and SMS. Tata Communication provides the service now. This has acquired license from Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited.
 
On 30th June this year, the TCL services shall get phased out, he added. There are a total of 1,532 authorized satellite phone connections in the country of which most of them get used at security forces.
 
4,143 permits to the maritime community are given by TCL. This is for using the phones at ships. These INMARSAT was under United Nations in 1979.
