Change in train fare on the anvil

Posted on: 24/Apr/2017 3:51:53 PM
The Central Ministry of Railways has decided to revise the train fares as a recourse to reduce the annual loss of Rs. 34000 Crores incurred by the Railways.

As a part of this measure, the Railways has decided to increase the age limit of the senior citizens from 60 to 70 years of age to avail the concessions.

Currently, 53 types of concessions on rail fares are being offered by the Railways under different sections.

Through these schemes, various debilitated people such as differently-abled people, senior citizens, students, army personnel, people suffering from prolonged diseases, and freedom fighters avail the benefits offered by the Railways.

On this, an annual expenditure of Rs. 1600 Crores is incurred by the Railways.

Some of the above concessions are being offered from the year 1950. Presently, a concession on the train fare is offered for the senior citizens in the country (Men - 60 years, concession 40 percent. Women - 58 years, Concession 50 percent).

In the above background, the railways have now decided to look at the aspect of above concessions with a view to reduce its huge annual losses.

Accordingly, some revisions are being made on the above concessions - the age limit for the senior citizens has been increased from 60 to 70 years of age.

Another decision taken by the Railways is to demand from the other central ministry departments the above concessions.

The Central Ministry of Social Justice, Women and Child Welfare department to pay the senior citizen concession

The Central Ministry of Human Welfare to pay back the students concession.

The Central Ministry of Defence to pay back the army personnel concession.
