New diploma course introduced in Tamil Nadu Agricultural University

For the first time in the country, a new diploma course for the education of the fertilizers and insecticide salespersons is to be introduced by the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University.

The central government took a policy decision that the fertilizers/insecticide sales persons must have  the basic knowledge of agriculture. The main concern is that only a good knowledge about agriculture will help the farmers to select and use the right chemicals.

Now, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University has introduced a new diploma course to impart knowledge on agriculture for the fertilizers/insecticides salespersons who do not have it.

The syllabus of the course will deal with the essential aspects of agriculture, such as the quantity and type of fertilizers and insecticides to be used. The University got the approval from the central ministry of agriculture and implemented the same.

The director of Distance Learning education department (in-charge) Ms. P. Shanthi explained that the distance education center was started in 2005. With the importance of knowledge/education about the usage of fertilizers in the field of agriculture, a 1-year Diploma course - Diploma in Agri Inputs - has been introduced.

With the central government policy that the basic knowledge about fertilizers and insecticides is essential apart from renewal of the license to sell the same, the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University has introduced this 1-year diploma course for the first time in the country.

The syllabus for the course was prepared under the guidance of the University’s Vice-chancellor Kumaraswamy, The government approval for the course was obtained, Now, it is all ready to start the course. It is expected that over 12000 fertilizers/insecticides salespersons will avail and benefit.

It is enough if the candidate has completed (passed or failed) 10th Standard to join this 1-year course.

The course will have 2 semesters (6-month period) and will be 48 weeks. Classes in Tamil will be conducted every Saturday.The course fee is 1-time Rs. 25000/-.

The students can join in any of the 9 colleges under the University and 15 Research Centres. So far. 1800 candidates have applied.

With this qualification, the fertilizers salespersons can renew their selling licenses.
