Nadigar Thilakam Sivaji Ganesan birth anniversary today - 1st October

Sivaji Ganesan was an actor par excellence who reigned in Tamil Cinema with a wide range of roles. He is idolized among the Tamil film fans. He was born on 1st October. His original full name is Villupuram Chinnaiah Pillai Ganesan.

Before entering the film world, Sivaji Ganesan acted in stage dramas. When Thandhai EVR Periyar saw the acting prowess of Ganesan on the stage in the drama Sivaji Kanda Hindy Rajyam as the king Sivaji, he was so impressed with that performance that Thandhai Periyar titled him Sivaji Ganesan. This name remained stuck with him!

Sivaji Ganesan made his debut in Tamil films with the film Parasakthi. With Karunanidhi penning the dialogues, the scene in which he remarks about God in the film became hugely popular.

He acted in a number of roles especially national patriotic heroes including Manohara, Veerapandiya Kattabomman, Raja Raja Chozhan, and Kappalottiya Thamizhan.

He acted in over 300 Tamil films 9 Telugu films, 2 Hindi films and 1 Malayalam film.

Sivaji had an excellent voice for dialogue diction, superb Tamil pronunciation, and marvelous act6ing skills and came to be known as an Emperor among actors Nadippu Chakravarthy.Films like Pasamalar and Vasanthamaligai are known for excellent emotional action.

Sivaji was an active member in the Dravidian party till 1955. He joined the Congress party in 1961. With some difference with the Congress party in the year 1987, he quit Congress and started his own political party called Thamzhaga Munnetra Munnani. However, he could not excel in his political career as much as his achievements in the film world.

During his last few years, he kept away from politics. He won several state, national, and international awards including Kalaimamani, Padma Sri, Padma Bhushan, Chevalier, and Dada Saheb Phalke award.

He died in his 72nd year on 21st July in the year 2001.
