A study published in the journal Nature Communications has said that a genetic variant will determine whether you are a morning person or not. Researchers at 23AndMe, a leading genetics company, have identified 15 locations in DNA that determines what they call morningness. The locations are called loci. According to the study, circadian rhythm or the biological clock governs morningness.

Say the researchers, The study provides genetic insights into a variety of conditions and traits, and how those genetic factors are affected by behaviour and environment. In this study we set out to discover more about an individual`s preference towards early rising and were able to identify the genetic associations with morningness as well as ties to lifestyle patterns and other traits.Individuals who are early are significantly less likely to have insomnia, or require more than eight hours of sleep per day, and less likely to suffer from depression than individuals who reported being night owls. After taking into account the effect of age and sex, morning persons are likely to have lower body mass index (BMI).

The study was conducted on more than 89,000 participants. Researchers found that seven of the loci associated with morningness are near those that prolong rapid eye movement or REM sleep. It showed that people over 60 years of age were more likely to be morning people. A solid 56 percent of the participants considered themselves night owls.
