Toor dal prices make housewives jittery

Posted on: 09/Oct/2015 11:15:20 AM
Toor Dal is grown in large numbers in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra, Madhya Pradesh, Uthara Pradesh and Gujarat. Since there was less rainfall, the production has come down very badly. Because of this, the prices of Toor Dal rose by Rs 50 per kilo last month. This was a great shock to housewives who run the family on budget basis. In fact some have even stopped making sambar.

Last week a 100 kilo Toor dal bag was sold for Rs 16,100. This week it has been increased by Rs 900 and is priced at Rs 17,000. 1 kilo Toor Dal which was sold for Rs 170 is now being sold for Rs 180 and 1 kilo packet Toor Dal which was sold for Rs 180 is now being sold for Rs 190.

Based on the demand, the Toor Dal is being imported from African countries like Tanzania and Kenya. This dal will be bigger in size when compared with out Toor Dal. Moreover if it is used for preparing sambar, it will not be tasty. Hence housewives are reluctant to buy this dal. Now this dal which was sold for Rs 130 is now being sold for Rs 140.

Like Toor Dal, the price of Urad dal which was sold for Rs 170 per kilo is now being sold for Rs 180. Moong dal which was sold for Rs 120 is now being sold for Rs 130. Similarly the Channa Dal which was sold for Rs 70 has been increased by Rs 5.

Urad Dal comes to Tamil Nadu from Gujarat and West Bengal. Since there was less harvest, the inflow has come down. Hence the price of Urad dal has gone up.

Moreover the main reason for this price rise is online business. Even at a time when there is less growth, hoarding is one of the reasons for price rise.

One of the member of the Tamil Nadu Groceries Merchant Association while speaking about this said, There are no chances of the prices of Toor dal to come down. Online business should be banned by the State and Central Government and then only the prices will come down.
