Healthy Food Recipes - Banana Stem Yoghurt Kootu (Vazhaithandu Mor Kootu)

Ingredients:

1. Banana Stem  (Medium Size) – 1 no
2. Curd – ½ cup
3. Turmeric Powder – Ό tsp
4. Mustard seeds – Ό tsp
5. Curry leaves – a few
6. Salt – as needed
7. Oil – 1 tsp

To grind:

1. Toor Dhal (Soaked) – 2 tsp
2. Coconut – a small piece
3. Jeera/ cumin seeds – 1 tsp
4. Red Chilli – 2 nos.

Method to Prepare:

1. Remove the outer cover of the plantain stem, cut it thinly into rounds removing the thread like fibres with your index finger. 


2. Then chop it into small pieces. Soak it in diluted buttermilk to prevent discolouration. 
3. Then completely drain the chopped plantain stem from water. Add it to the pressure cooker and add turmeric powder, salt and required quantity of water and cook it for 1 whistle.



4. Soak toor dal for about 15 minutes. Drain it and add to the mixer and add coconut, cumin seeds, and red chilli and add required quantity of water and grind well.
5. Open the pressure cooker lid and add this grinded paste to it and mix well.



6. Allow this mix to boil well.
7. Cover the lid and allow it to boil for some time.
8. Finally add the yoghurt and switch off the stove.


9. Heat the pan with a spoon of oil and add cumin seeds, mustard seeds, asafoetida ad curry leaves. Once it splitters, add it on top of the yoghurt Kootu.



10. Serve hot Plantain Yoghurt Kootu along with rice!




Tips:

• Once you add the yoghurt, immediately switch off the stove. Never allow it to boil.
• In other way, we can boil toor dal along with the plantain stem in a pressure cooker. But here we are boiling the plantain stem and adding the paste of the grinded soaked toor dal, this will give a different taste.
• Once small quantity of toor dal is sufficient for this dish.
• You can use this Plantain stem Yoghurt Kootu as a side dish for either rice, chapatti or dosa.
