Spikes in blood sugar if fasting until lunch

A study conducted by Tel Aviv University has proven that skipping breakfast causes spikes in blood sugar levels. The study was published in Diabetes Care.

22 Type 2 diabetes patients were studied. The average age was 56.9 years and the average body mass index (BMI) was 28.2 kg/sq. mt. The patients ate the same things on both the days - Milk, tuna, bread and a chocolate breakfast bar. On one day they ate breakfast and on the other day they skipped it. It was found that, by skipping breakfast, the beta cells that secrete insulin `forgot` to do their job, thus raising blood sugar. Also, the levels of fatty acids in the blood increase if one is fasting until lunch.

"It`s quite remarkable that, for type-2 diabetic individuals, the omission of breakfast is associated with a significant increase in all-day blood sugar spikes and of HbA1C, which represents average blood glucose levels over the preceding three months... (We) highly recommend that type-2 diabetics not skip breakfast, because it causes major damage to the beta cell function and leads to high sugar levels, even if they don`t overeat at lunch and dinner", said one of the researchers.
