Chennai Metrowater has announced that it has made arrangements for overcoming shortages in drinking water supply till the onset of North-east monsoon.

Chennai Metro water official explained that 580 million tons of drinking water is supplied to Chennai city on the average every day. Out of this, 200 million litres of water are from the desalination plant which converts sea water into drinking water. 180 million tons are taken from the Veeranam Project.

As Mettur Dam is to be opened shortly, the supply from Veeranam stands confirmed. Presently, 100 million tons of water is obtained from the rented agricultural wells in Thiruvallur district. Another 25 million tons of water is obtained from the MWSSB wells.

Meteorological centre has forecast that there would be excess rains from 8th August in Chennai.

In this scenario, it is expected that water shortage can be overcome with the current arrangements. Further, there would not be any necessity to bring water from Mettur by train.
