Mothers do not receive advise on infant care, says survey

A survey conducted in the US has shown that many expectant and new mothers do not receive advise on infant care. The survey report was published in the journal Paediatrics. It was funded by the National Institutes of Health.

According to the report, health care groups have issued guidelines and recommendations for infant care which reduce the occurrence of disease and is, in many case, life saving. However, mothers have claimed that they have not received advise pertaining to the case at hand.

One thousand new mothers were questioned about advise from their doctors. 20 per cent of them said that they had not received recommendations on breastfeeding or placing infants on their backs. These two tools have been known to prevent sudden infant death syndrome, also known as SIDS.

"This survey showed that physicians have an opportunity to provide new mothers with much-needed advice on how to improve infant health and even save infant lives", said a researcher.
