Weight loss leads to better liver health, says study

A study published in the journal Gastroentology has said that weight loss may reduce the risk of a fatty liver. The weight loss may be through exercise and diet or through surgery.

Fatty liver disease is called Non Alcoholic Steatohepatitis or NASH. Reasons for a fatty liver are unclear, but the study shows that weight loss (in whichever form) does result in a relatively healthier liver. According to the study, to reverse scarring of the liver in overweight or obese people, they would have to lose at least 10 per cent of their body weight. This would lead to NASH resolution. Of the people in the study group, those who lost modestly (around 7 to 10 per cent) experienced reduced liver damage. This was the case in some subsets like male patients and those without diabetes. On the other hand, those who did not lose much (less that 5 per cent) experienced worsening liver scarring.
