The stage is now set for the 1st Chennai Metro rail operation. Southern Railway is now planning to expedite the integration of the 2 subrban systems – MRTS between Chennai Beach & Velachery and the new Chennai Metro rail.
This will help commuters to a great extent when the 2 systems are seamlessly linked. MRTS system will be handed over to the Metro Rail authorities. This linkage was started a few years ago. Currently, more than 90000 commuters use MRTS every day.
Once the Chennai Beach-Velachery MRTS line is extended to St Thomas Mount, commuters will be able to change over to metro rail trains and vice versa. The station is being designed in such a way that MRTS trains and metro rail trains can be operated from two levels of the same building.
Southern Railway general manager Ashok K Agarwal has already submitted a proposal and the board will have to take a decision. The functioning of the suburban railway network is expected to improve when metro rail starts operations and the lines are interlinked and a common ticketing platform comes into force.
Southern Railway chief operations manager S Anantharaman said the suburban train network could be part of CUMTA (Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority) that was being planned to ensure a seamless integration of ticketing, connectivity and other facilities among suburban trains, MRTS, metro rail, buses and other modes of transport.
