Obesity damages liver

Dr. P Basumani Gastroenterologist said that in the next 20 years, 5% of people will be affected by liver disease due to obesity in Tamil Nadu. 
 
Dr P Basumani, medical consultant and gastroenterologist at Fortis Malar hospital while speaking in an awareness seminar said, “Of all the organs liver is the largest next to skin. Liver is the most important part of the human body which helps with protein production, blood clotting, cholesterol maintaining and other important things. In patients who come to us for evaluation of liver transplant, 20% had a fatty liver disease. Further, alcohol has always been considered the root cause of a damaged liver, but even teetotalers who are overweight, with high abdominal obesity or waist circumference have been complaining of liver diseases. If the liver is affected, kidneys, brain and lungs will also be affected. If the liver is affected, you get jaundice. At the same time the liver can also be affected without jaundice. In Tamil Nadu, 20% people have fatty liver. In the next 20 years, there are chances of 5% people to have fatty liver. To avoid this, one should abstain from alcohol and fatty foods. One should have regular exercise and eat easily digestible foods. the hands should be kept clean.”
