Grand Chithirai festival of Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple: Divine flag hoisting on April 21st!

For the grand occasion of the Chithirai Thiruvizha, the annual tradition, at the famous Madurai Sri Meenakshi Amman Temple, the divine flag hoisting ceremony signifying the start of the festival is scheduled on 21st April.

The important event of Madurai Sri Kallazhagr entering the river is scheduled on 4th May.

The grand Chithirai festival will be celebrated between 20th April & 2nd May.

During the festival, the procession of the main deities Meenakshi & Sundareswarar along with 3 other deities will be taken on the 4  main streets around the temple.

The festival starts with the divine flag-hoisting ceremony on 21st April morning.

Pattabhishekham will be performed on the night of 28th April.

Dhikkuvijayam will be performed on  29th April. The divine marriage of the deities of Meenakshi & Sundareswarar will be performed on 30th April.

The famous event of chariot procession will be performed on the morning of 1st May.

Theerthavari will be performed during the night on 2nd May. This is followed by Devendra Poojai after which the grand Chithirai festival concludes.

The deity of the Lord Kallazhagar will be taken on procession on the morning of 2nd May. Edhisevai will be performed on  the morning of 3rd May. Thirumanjanam will be performed during the evening of 3rd May.

The most important occasion of the festival, Lord Kallazhagar entering the river Vaigai, will be performed at 6.45 AM on 4th May.

On May 5th, the events of Saba Vimosanam to Manduga Rishi at Vandiyur and Dasavatharam events will be performed.

On 5th May, the deity of Kallazhagar will be carried on a flower palanquin on the way back to his temple. The Lord will return to his temple on 7th May.
