WORLD HEART DAY AWARENESS PROGRAMMES

Fourth Sunday is observed as World heart day. Hospitals and voluntary organisations conducted awareness programmes here on Sunday as part of the World Heart day.
‘Workplace Wellness` was the theme for this year. Screening camps were conducted and clinics to deal with cardiac-related problems launched. A team of 26 cardiologists from the Chennai chapter of the Cardiological Society of India held a screening programme for the residents of The Banyan, a home for destitute and mentally ill women in Mogappair. Of the 181 persons screened, about 15 were diagnosed as diabetic and 30 had hypertension. Those with ailments were prescribed medicines, said K. Kannan, joint secretary of the Society`s Chennai chapter.
Fortis Malar Hospital concluded its week-long screening programme with a cycle rally. Later, a heart-shaped human chain was formed on the sands of the Marina beach. Street plays were organised to explain the need to care for one`s heart.
The members of Lions Club of Anna Nagar conducted a free cardiac check up camp at Swami Vivekananda Diagnostic Centre in D.G. Vaishnav College, Arumbakkam. A total of 300 persons from nearby areas benefitted from the camp. Cardiologists from Madras Medical Mission and retired government hospital surgeons screened the patients.
Those who needed further treatment were referred to MMM, said P.V.G. Murali Mohan, co-chairman of the diagnostic centre.
The Director of Medical Education, V. Kanagasabai, who participated in the programme, presented the Melvin Jones Millennium Award 2010 to C.S. Vijay Shankar, consultant cardiothoracic surgeon, Apollo Hospital. Global Hospitals, in association with Indian Medical Association, organised a symposium on ‘Preventive measures for Workplace Wellness` and also inaugurated a weekly hypertension clinic. A team of five cardiologists from Frontier Lifeline, Mogappair, conducted a free health camp at Sethu Baskara Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Ambattur on Saturday. About 250 students and their parents were screened.
