According to new studies, those who wish to stay young need to run a lot. Researches conducted recently have proved that senior citizens who as a way of exercise, run several times in a week tend to expend similar amount of energy like that of 20 year old walking. Experts conclude that it is running that makes the person to stay healthy and young.

The research saw 30 older and healthy volunteer adults of average 69 years (15 females / 15 males), who walked or ran for exercise. They exercised minimum of 3 times in a week and about 30 minutes for 6 months per workout.

A senior expert stated that older adults taking participation in aerobic activities like running had lower metabolic walking rate than that of sedentary older adults. With ‘horsepower’ or aerobic capacity among the aged declining fast, it is found that fuel economy is being maintained by old runners.

A professor added that walking came with several positive health benefits such as preventing weight gain, depression, diabetes and heart disease. High efficiency is derived from muscle cells in older runners, as external biomechanical differences were not found between older runners and walkers
