Normal lives bring thoughts of ‘fear’ among those having epilepsy. They need to realize the fact that they can lead normal life, provided they undergo appropriate disease management, according to some experts and doctors convening at panel discussion that was held recently about Epilepsy and personal care.

Almost one out of 200 have epilepsy across the globe. According to a senior official, epilepsy incidence in India is much higher than other countries, because of the risks involved in perinatal injuries, poor antenatal care, infections such as cysticercosis and tuberculosis, including road accidents.

He further added that there has been a rising prevalence among elderly people and this could be because of degenerative cerebrovascular disease increase and change in demography.

A senior consultant neurologist stated that proper management is considered to be the key for those with epilepsy. Along with medical interventions, there need to be dietary modifications.

A well known physician stated that epilepsy management requires ketogenic diet, especially in children. Diet should be low in carbohydrates and high in fat. As side effects tend to include acidosis, dyslipidemia (blood cholesterol being abnormal), weight loss and kidney stones, proper supervision is required for undertaking this diet.
