Tamil Nadu Government has taken measure to install one more desalination plant with a capacity of 150 million litres at Nemmeli in order to meet the growing needs of drinking water for the Chennai city residents. Activities have already commenced.

Desalination plant officials explained:

The ever-increasing urban population in Chennai, insufficient rains from monsoon seasons, etc have made the task of distribution of drinking water a challenge.

Desalination plants at Minjur and Nemmeli with a capacity of 100 million litres each was installed to augment the growing need for drinking water to Chennai.

Now, there are plans to commission one more desalination plant in the vacant land owned by the desalination plant authority. This will cost RS. 1000 Crores and will have a capacity of 1500 million litres. Tamil Nadu government has already submitted the plans to the central government for approval.

If approval is granted early, there are possibilities of starting the project in the current financial year.

Another project with a 400 million litre desalination plant is also planned in Pattipulam near Chennai. However, because of difficulties in acquiring the land, this was given up. Now, another location, Perur, in the East Coast Road has been chosen. Project details are being drafted to be submitted to the central government. Based on approval, this desalination project at Perur with 400 million litre capacity will also start immediately.
