Shia Muslims on Muharram march

Shia Muslims from all over the state will participate in a `Matham` procession in Triplicane, Chennai on Saturday to mark the 7th day of Muharram, first month of the Islamic calendar.“Muharram has been observed on Tamil territory for the past 400 years and by millions across the globe for more than 1400 years,“ says Tamil Nadu Shia Muslim Convention Board secretary Nusrath Ali Khan. Matham is a symbolic blood shedding to pay homage to the grandson and other kin of Prophet Mohammed, who were martyred in the battle of Karbala. The 7th day marks the martyrdom of Qasim, a great grandson of the Prophet.
