Study on child healthcare

Results of a study by GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare conducted in association with an NGO ‘Save the Children’ state that 22 per cent of children of ages between 3 and 6 living in slum areas of northern Chennai are under-nourished and that about 20 per cent have severe acute malnutrition. The rest of the population suffers with moderate acute malnutrition, the study result added.

This study was organized following statistical reports provided by the National Family Health Survey (NFHS – III) according to which nearly 23 per cent of children aging between 3 an 5 in Chennai are underweight and that 25 per cent of them have only stunted growth, said Alka Singh, state programme manager.

The study was conducted in phases. The first phase was started in July 2013 at 20 non-notified slums in Chennai costing Rs 40 lakh. This involved 35 community health workers and Integrated Child Development Services officials belonging to 14 various anganwadi centres. The project also had training sessions on proper nutrition and effective way of growing children.
