All applicants who registered for voter IDs after the parliamentary elections are set to be given their new voter ID cards.

The current cards in black &white get easily damaged and rendered useless.

Hence, it was decided to issue new voter IDs made of plastic like the PAN cards which are not easily breakable or damaged by exposure to water . They will be 8.6 cm long & 5.4 cm wide.

Tamil Nadu is also progressing on the issue of new voter ID cards. 2 firms have been selected by ELCOT after floating tenders. Tamil Nadu has been divided into 5 zones – Chennai, Madurai, Trichy, Salme, and Coimbatore. Out of the selected firms, one will take care of 3 zones and the second, the other 2.

The design of the cards carrying English & Tamil has been crystallized. Printing is set to start.

Election commission officials informed:

12 lakh people have applied for voter IDs before the recent parliamentary election. They will be given voter IDs in black & white.

For those who applied after the elections, colour voter ID cards will be given.
Design & testing of the new cards are completed.

The firms selected for printing will open their offices in the different zones for printing the voter ID cards. They will hand over the cads to the Corporation offices.

The contract with the firms has been made for 5 years and the printing has to be completed in 48 hours.

So, the people who applied after the elections are set to be given new plastic  & coloured voter ID cards.

The old voter ID cards will be given color voter cards later.
