Beware property tax defaulters

Chennai Corporation has started publishing the list of property tax defaulters online. On Tuesday evening, officials released the first list of 195 defaulters from areas such as T. Nagar, Royapettah, Alandur, Nungambakkam, Teynampet and Mylapore. The defaulters include popular malls on Anna Salai in Teynampet and R.K. Salai in Mylapore. Topping the list is a hotel on G.N. Chetty Road in T. Nagar with more than Rs.5 crore arrears.
Another list of 1,000 defaulters will be released shortly, said an official. The city has more than 11 lakh property tax assesses in the 15 zones. More than 5 lakh properties are yet to be covered in the tax net.
