Food items recommended for individuals with high cholesterol

Due to hereditary reasons, some individuals have high cholesterol in the blood at a very young age. So, parents with hereditary history of high cholesterol are better advised to check the blood cholesterol level of their children at young age itself.

Apart from hereditary reasons, our food habits and the increasing cases of diabetics also cause high cholesterol in blood. If the reason is hereditary, cholesterol level is likely to be many times more than the normal level.

There will be symptoms of diseases and other health problems. It is better to consult and get medical advice regarding any genetic problems. This will prevent the same problems to occur in the next generation.

Urinary illnesses, glandular problems, and thyroid conditions can cause increase in cholesterol level. Hence, it is better to check whether these problems exist.

  • Individuals with high cholesterol must do physical exercises daily at least for half-an-hour. They have to keep strict watch and control on their food habits. Fat-rich foods must be thoroughly avoided. Junk food and canned food are high-calorie food items. They are rich in trans-fats. They are low in fibre, high in salt, and low in vitamins& minerals. Obese persons& pot-bellied persons should avoid these items. They should take extra vegetables, greens, grains, and fruits.
  •  We should take more of fibre-rich food. Diabetics should monitor and keep control of glucose level to be low. Care should be taken in the oil used for cooking. The oil should contain MUFA/PUTA and omega-3 fatty acids
  • Butter, ghee, dalda, fat-rich milk, meat, liver, kidneys, and prawn should be avoided. Sesame oil, coconut oil, and palm oil, that are rich in fat, should be avoided. Bakery items and cakes must also be avoided.
  • Olive oil, safflower oil, flax seed oil, and canola oil can be used for cooking. Items like fish and nuts, which are rich in omega-3, can be included in the food.
