In an effort to ensure proper disbursement of relief fund towards ban to fishing in Tamil Nadu, the department is in full swing works to crosscheck the proofs of eligible recipients with the database maintained. Additionally, a new method is introduced this year in which the funds will be directly transferred to the respective recipient’s account, said an official from the fisheries department.

On account of the reproduction period of fishes, the government bans fishing for 45 days between April 15 and May 29 every year. In view of this, the government avails Rs 2000 as relief fund for all fishermen families. Now, owing to the increasing need for money to satisfy their daily needs, fishermen have pleaded to the government for more money.

On interrogation, Nanjil Ravi of Akila Indiya Meenavar Sangam said the ban for fishing affects more than 13 villages close to the sea which includes over 75 lakh people directly and 35 lakh people indirectly. But, the government avails the relief fund irrespective of the number of family members. When all the family members including father, mother and son are involved in fishing, the government gives just a single fund of Rs 2000 considering them all to come under a single family.
