Velachery lies in the southern outskirts of
the Chennai city. The place is about 13 kms far from Chennai central
that is taken to be the George Town suburb. The adjoining regions of
Velachery include Adyar, Guindy and Thiruvanmiyur. The region is
essentially a residential place and with the increasing commercial and
industrial activities in the Mammalapuram the place is being considered
as ideal for the professionals employed at the developing down town.
The IIT campus, Tharamani and Adambakkam line up the boundaries of
Velachery. The area contained within consists of an urban population,
residential houses and great many small enterprises. The region is
provided with a hard surface and there are small hillocks at many
places. The place is believed to have had marshes in the southern parts
which at present are filled with the hard crust of the land.
